CURRENT ARTIST / RESEARCH STATEMENT

A key attribute of quality paintings and images in our culture is in their ability to slow down and capture the viewer in an experience of suspended time and space. In today’s society, the constant barrage and persistent deluge of information does not easily allow for these moments to happen without effort. By taking into account that the mind is not truly bound by time, I attempt to use technology to slow down the viewer to a place of contemplation. The combination of digital paintings and timed animations projected onto oil painted or printed canvases challenge the viewer’s desire for what a painting is supposed to be. This juxtaposition creates a dialogue about the value that our culture places on the fine art object versus the value of the image that is created with light using paint and pixels. Within this backdrop of extended or suspended time, I seek to create narratives about values, decisions, and ideologies. I want my work to connect with the viewer and promote introspection on the significance of their participation and responsibility in our culture as it is practiced and created.
